DOWNTOWN DIGEST - APRIL 2017
warm hearts ~ open minds ~ hard work ~ prosperity

Update from the Executive Director

Hello, I'm Courtney Thraen, and I'm excited to take the helm at the Framingham Downtown Renaissance from the talented Holli Andrews, who created a sustainable foundation for our non-profit organization. Out dynamic downtown is the perfect setting for demonstrating a healthy, walkable area that underscores the social economy.

Background - Hailing from a small town in Illinois, I moved to Massachusetts in 2008 when I took a teaching position with the U.S. Navy at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA). Prior to MMA, I traveled around the world on two deployments as Navigator on the USS MOMSEN (DDG 92).  I appreciated the Commonwealth's international draw that produced so many exciting innovations.  I instantly knew Massachusetts would be my home.

Why Framingham? -  After living in Plymouth, Weymouth, and Quincy, I chose Framingham because it was robust with both civic and commercial activity.  I appreciated Framingham's environmentally friendly policies, Complete Streets initiative, and transit-oriented development (TOD) strategy.  As I complete my Master of City Planning degree at Boston University, I have witnessed the critical foundation for planning and infrastructure elements take place downtown.

Strategy - Phase I is relationship-building with both business owners and building owners.  Capacity building includes support for beautification and sign and facade improvements, cross-collaborations, and workforce training through the new Downtown Framingham Business Coalition.  Phase II is outreach and engagement within the TOD zone, at major corporations, and in the greater Boston area through "downtown ambassadors".

After five months of daily walks, I have been showered with support from business and building owners alike. Patrons from across New England come for our great breweries and often discover other restaurants and fun shops.  It's impossible to not be personally inspired by the hopes and dreams of our business owners as they spearhead the great revival of downtown Framingham.  I seek to build upon their unabashed courage by promoting an area where people can stand by their convictions while striving toward both personal and professional goals. Thank you for continuing to stand tall with the small-business momentum in our walkable, colorful urban core!
