DOWNTOWN DIGEST - JUNE 2017
spurring growth in our urban core

Safe, Sound, and Prosperous

The Framingham Police Department (FPD) just released a snapshot of downtown crime data, which revealed a drastic reduction in reported crime from 2015 to 2016.

Overall, there was a 75.8% decrease of reported crimes from 2015 to 2016 in downtown Framingham.
The most frequent offense, suspicious activity, decreased by 77.2%.

We encourage you to come to downtown Framingham during the day or night, just as we do!  Not only will you add "more eyes on the street", but you will also enjoy the bright lights, smooth sidewalks, friendly people, and the cultural ambiance.   Please continue to support our Fire Department, Auxiliary Police Force, Emergency Medical Services, Department of Public Works, and of course, our Police.  These departments work together vigilantly to create a safe, walkable downtown where everyone can really enjoy life!  Special thanks to FPD Crime Data Analyst, Kate Curtis-Bozio, and FPD Public Information Officer, Lt. Grigas, for supplying this important data to the Framingham Downtown Renaissance.  We have also placed a new grant request for complimentary security features.

POLICY PROGRESS

five areas we're committed to enhancing
1)  Comprehensive waste management
- A consensus-building appeal letter will be sent in June to all businesses, landlords and property owners to promote the use of one responsive and accountable vendor.
- A request for proposal (to include a downtown commercial recycling center) will be released in September.

2)  Contingency plan for managed on-street parking
- In May, a petition was signed by business leaders in the Downtown Framingham Business Coalition requesting a contingency plan to manage on-street parking during the absence of meters.
- The feasibility and implementation of this contingency plan will be addressed at the next  Framingham Traffic Roadway and Safety Committee meeting on June 14.

3)  Sidewalk usage guidelines
- In May, storefront businesses along Concord Street and Union Avenue were canvassed about preferences for storefront sidewalk usage.
- In May, usage guidelines were formulated that included liability and insurance matters.
- Meetings with key Town of Framingham department stakeholders will be held to ensure complete compliance with ADA regulations.

4)  Data collection and assessments of heavy trucking
- Data collection of heavy trucking movements will commence in June with support from our partners MEDIA BOSS and Bullard Building, LLC.  This evidence-based research will inform the impacts of extra heavy trucking in our mixed-use environment that includes walkers and cyclists.
- Data collection results will be shared with pertinent community and government stakeholders.

5)  Open space planning
- In May, we met with Town of Framingham planners and members of the Sudbury Valley Trustees to evaluate potential sites for improved green space usage which also highlighted challenges from contamination and marshlands.
- Will review models for standing-up a committee to oversee a potential new community garden location along with identifying participants to manage the garden.
- Will work in the field to collect public feedback on the usage of open spaces and how these spaces can enhance the quality of life for those who live or transit near them.

IN THE NEWS

TIME FOR GRATITUDE
these partners have helped us achieve shared goals for downtown prosperity
During the spring semester, Framingham State University students in Professor Colleen Coyne's business writing course visited downtown Framingham and formed strategies to regularly draw students downtown.  One group researched how students should be introduced to downtown Framingham, including plans for a moonlight breakfast event.  The second group studied how to effectively advertise and market a live entertainment event to students.  As a non-profit, we cannot fully express how wonderful it was to visit and work with these inspiring students.
This spring, Atlantis Dental participated in three of our events.  They have personally sponsored the Mural Mile Road Race and the brewCycle events. They are a faithful participant in our annual marathon celebration.  Dr. Sumbul Naqvi is an active director on our Board of Directors, and she helps with the Downtown Framingham Business Coalition.  This partnership reinforces and sustains growth (and great teeth, too)!
Cheryl Cohen of Cheryl Cohen Mosaics Art Center in Holliston just provided us a wonderful donation to ensure we can continue our important work and pay our administrative expenses.   We are so grateful for Cheryl's faith in our work and mission, and Cheryl is a wonderful neighbor in Ashland.
Again, we're so grateful for the leadership from Jack's Abby Brewing Company and the entire management and staff at the Springdale Beer Barrel Room.  They encouraged us to use their space to hold our first ever Taste of Downtown Framingham, and they are committed to raising up other businesses and restaurants in our downtown core.  This selflessness and team spirit will blanket our downtown with continued success.
Exhibit 'A' Brewing Company not only serves great craft brews, but they also seek to support downtown.   The leadership team was extremely gracious in supporting our recent brewCycle event, which promoted cycling and walking infrastructure while also catalyzing a culture change that seeks respect for all modes of travel.

SCENES FROM DOWNTOWN

DOWNTOWN AMBASSADOR
what it takes to be a game-changer
Adam is the Department Head of Social Studies for Grade 8 at Wellesley Middle School, and he is on the Town of Framingham Transitional Bylaw Review Committee.

“It is amazing to me how much Framingham’s downtown has changed in just the past few years. The addition of a thriving arts scene and so many new, different restaurants and breweries are putting downtown Framingham on the map as a place to visit for our residents and for people who live across Metrowest. I love getting the word out that there is much to do and see; I know when I take friends from out of town to meet up there, they are impressed and envious of the cultural diversity we are lucky to have in our home. I can’t wait to see what the next few years has in store for our downtown.”
